FISPGHAN Outstanding Achievement Award in Hepatology 2024

Professor Mei-Hwei Chang

Professor Chang is currently a Distinguished Chair Professor in the Department of

Pediatrics at the College of Medicine, National Taiwan University (NTU) in Taiwan. She

earned her M.D. from the College of Medicine at NTU. She received general pediatric

residency training at the Department of Pediatrics at NTU Hospital and completed her

pediatric gastroenterology fellowship at UCLA in the USA. Professor Chang joined the

faculty of the Department of Pediatrics at NTU and was promoted to Professor in 1990.

She became the Chairperson of the Department of Pediatrics at the College of

Medicine, NTU, and at NTU Hospital. She was the Director of the Hepatitis Research

Center at NTU Hospital from 2009 to 2015.

Major contributions in research and global health

Professor Chang provided evidence to prove the hepatitis B vaccine as the first cancer-

preventive vaccine in humans. She also initiated antiviral therapy in the third trimester of

pregnancy and proved its long-term safety and effectiveness for infants and mothers in

preventing mother-to-infant transmission of the hepatitis B virus. In addition, Professor

Chang established the first universal stool color card screening program for biliary

atresia in the world. This program has solidified early treatment and significantly

improved patient outcomes.

  • 2013: The World Academy of Science Prize
  • 2014: Canadian Association for the Study of Liver/Canadian Liver Foundation Sass-Kortsak Award
  • 2015: Asian Pacific Primary Liver Cancer Expert (APPLE) Professor Jei-Low Sung’s Award
  • 2017: American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases Distinguished Achievement Award
  • 2018-present: Member of The World Academy of Science
  • 2022: Asian Pacific Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (APSPGHAN) Lifetime Achievement Award
